Raw Foodism

It sounds like some sort of cult, doesn't it?  I'm sure you've heard of the new(ish) fad: the Raw Food Diet.  It was developed based on the theory that "a diet consisting mainly of uncooked, unprocessed plant foods leads to a leaner body, clearer skin, and higher energy." A friend was telling me the other day about how it's really helped her get her body more in balance. 

I was grabbing my daily salad in the caf today when I realized that most of what I eat qualifies on the Raw Food Diet.  
So then I thought, Why not go all the way? It's the beginning of the month, so I'll do a 30-day raw food diet.
But, I'm going to make some exceptions: eggs and chicken are a must, as my protein sources are limited when eating at a school cafeteria, and I've got to have some plain cooked beans or sweet potato from time to time since I've already cut out all grains. I'm not looking for malnourishment here. So I'm not a raw food purist, but I thought it would be a fun new thing to try. 

AND THEN....I remembered that Thanksgiving is in 24 days. I am definitely not adhering to any more of a restrictive diet than I must on my most favourite holiday, so this is DAY 1 of my 25-day Raw Food Diet. 


I feel like once in a while it's a good idea to push my self-discipline as far as I can.  I haven't really had to exercise self-control with the whole no-grains diet, since I feel so much better now and never crave or even think twice about the things I've cut out.  I'm hoping the raw foods will be a bit more of a challenge. When I make it all the way to the end, Thanksgiving dinner will be that much more delicious!

  1. I considered the Raw Food Diet. I decided against it - despite many good qualities - because of the sheer prep work involved. Feeding a family of 8 this way would require a huge lifestyle shift. Also, I then remembered that Gerson, in its original form, was a vegan raw food diet. I kind of had to laugh. Good luck! I hope it really helps. I have definitely cut down on grains for my family. Also, I use fresh veggies almost exclusively (as opposed to canned, frozen, etc.).
